Materivigilance Programmer of India (MvPI) by IPC
The Materi vigilance Programmer of India (MvPI) is a national initiative launched by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to monitor and ensure the safety of medical devices in India.
What is Materivigilance?
Materi vigilance is the science and activities related to the detection, assessment, understanding, and prevention of adverse events (AEs) or other problems related to medical devices.
Just like pharmacovigilance ensures medicine safety, Materi vigilance ensures the safety of devices like:
• Stents
• Implants
• Ventilators
• Surgical instruments
• Syringes and diagnostic devices
Who Runs the MvPI?
• Nodal Agency: Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ghaziabad
• Coordinating Centre: IPC coordinates with:
• Medical colleges
• Hospitals
• Device manufacturers
• Regulatory bodies like CDSCO
Objectives of MvPI:
1. Collect data on adverse events (AEs) associated with medical devices.
2. Analyze risk factors and promote safer usage.
3. Inform CDSCO (Central Drugs Standard Control Organization) for regulatory actions.
4. Train healthcare professionals on identifying and reporting AEs.
What Does MvPI Do?
• Sets up MDMCs (Medical Device Monitoring Centres) across India.
• Encourages reporting of:
• Malfunction
• Death/injury caused by devices
• Use errors
• Publishes safety alerts and recalls.
• Builds a national safety database.
How to Report an Adverse Event?
Healthcare professionals or users can:
• Submit a form online at: https://ipc.gov.in
• Email: [email protected]
• Use printed forms available at hospitals and pharmacies
Why It’s Important:
• India has over 5000 registered medical device types.
• Ensuring patient safety through real-world data is critical to public health.
• Helps India develop a robust medical device regulatory ecosystem.
MvPI in Your Career (Pharmacy/Research):
• Ideal for students in pharmacovigilance, regulatory affairs, and device testing.
• IPC also conducts MvPI workshops, internships, and certifications.
• Boosts your resume if applying in hospitals, pharma, or regulatory jobs.
